I recently returned from a pleasant vacation to Barcelona, Spain and Lisbon, Portugal. Our travel style is very unstructured and involves lots of on-foot exploration with visits to historical landmarks.
Birding isn’t our main reason for travel but we looked for birds everywhere we went and visited a few spots specifically to see them.

A solitary exotic bird, the Cattle Tyrant, was spotted this week in downtown Corpus Christi, Texas. Birders from all over the country rushed to the gulf coast of Texas to try to catch a glimpse of this yellow flycatcher far from its home in South America.

Since 2016, volunteers across the United States have participated in the Climate Watch survey to collect data about target species to help Audubon scientists better understand how birds are responding to climate change. This summer was my first opportunity to work with the Bexar Audubon Society to get involved and collect this crucial data about the Lesser Goldfinch.

We spent the weekend in South Padre Island, a small barrier island off the west coast of Texas. I decided to visit the Birding and Nature Center located on the southern end of the island and found a reported rare visitor, the “Mangrove Warbler.”

I arrived to Medina River Natural Area at 7:45 AM with my gear in tow. Once my setup was on, I slowly embarked down Rio Medina trail with attentive ears. My focus today was to record and capture as many clear bird sounds as I could.
