Find birds on the go with new features in the eBird app

A recent update to the eBird app has brought hotspots directly to your fingertips. Now, upon opening the eBird app, you’ll see a new “Explore” tab. In the explore tab you are presented with a map view that shows all of the nearby birding hotspots.

The Backyard Bird Count is Almost Here!

The Great Backyard Bird Count is a yearly tradition that calls upon bird watchers of all ages to spend at least 15 minutes watching and counting birds. Once finished, participants submit their sightings to either eBird or birdcount.org. Your participation contributes to citizen science and creates a snapshot of distribution and abundance of bird species. The backyard bird count 2018 is February 16-19!

Los Angeles Bird Fest 2015 Attracts Bird Lovers from All Over

This past Saturday, I had the opportunity to attend the second annual Los Angeles Bird Fest. The free event was put on by the Western National Parks Association with participation by the National Audubon Society, International Bird Rescue, Heal the Bay, California Wildlife Center, and other vendors and organizations. The event kicked off at 9AM with bird walks being led by San Fernando Valley Audubon volunteers.

The first bird walk of the morning was led in two different groups that explored around the nearby King Gillette Ranch.

New eBird Update Brings Photos and Audio to Checklists

The Cornell Lab of Ornithology and eBird have been hard at work bringing improvements to the online bird checklist site, eBird. Their latest update on November 3rd brings the ability to attach photos and audio clips to bird checklists. This rich media becomes a part of the Macaulay Library, which acts an a permanent archive for eBird data.

2nd Annual Los Angeles Bird Festival on December 5th

On Saturday, December 5th, 2015, the Western National Parks Association is hosting the 2nd annual Bird Festival in Los Angeles at the Santa Monica Mountains Interagency Visitor Center. This free event is a great chance to meet local bird experts, go on a guided bird walk, watch a live bird presentation, and more.
