Los Angeles Bird Fest 2015 Attracts Bird Lovers from All Over

This past Saturday, I had the opportunity to attend the second annual Los Angeles Bird Fest. The free event was put on by the Western National Parks Association with participation by the National Audubon Society, International Bird Rescue, Heal the Bay, California Wildlife Center, and other vendors and organizations. The event kicked off at 9AM with bird walks being led by San Fernando Valley Audubon volunteers.

The first bird walk of the morning was led in two different groups that explored around the nearby King Gillette Ranch.

Video: Hummingbird Builds a Nest

Hummingbirds weight about as much as a penny and fly hundreds of miles each year during migration. Watch as this tiny female Anna’s Hummingbird creates a nest for its young. It steals spider silk fibers, moss, small leaves, and other materials to strengthen the cup that it sits in.

Releasing Gulls at White Point

Recently, I had the privilege of participating in a release of three Western Gulls that we helped rehabilitate at International Bird Rescue in San Pedro, CA.

We frequently receive injured or sick gulls and other aquatic birds at the rehab center. The veterinary staff does their best to plan a path to wellness for these birds.
