Bird Banding in Zuma Canyon

Today brought the opportunity to participate in my first wild bird banding experience. My friend, Dinuk, was invited to help with the banding and was able to invite me along!

I woke up early at 5:30AM and headed over to Zuma Canyon next to Malibu, CA. It is important to get started as early as possible for any bird studies. Birds are very active in the morning when they are searching for water and food. The banding station was ran today from 7AM to noon.

Los Angeles Bird Festival in The Santa Monica Mountains

Today, I had the pleasure of attending the first-ever Los Angeles Bird Festival in the Santa Monica Mountains. This event was held by the Western National Parks Association at Santa Monica Mountains Interagency Visitor Center.

As I walked in, I first spotted a beautiful Red-tailed Hawk perched on a man’s gloved hand. I walked over to his booth and asked a few questions about his beautiful bird. The hawk and just been sprayed with water so it was covered in glistening droplets.

Vote for Proposition P to support Los Angeles Birds

The voting season is upon us and I was reached out to by someone working with the Los Angeles County Parks and Recreation Department to help inform LA voters about Proposition P.

Back in 1992, voters passed the Safe Neighborhood Parks Tax which helped fund almost 1,500 neighborhood and regional park projects. This small $23/year tax was used to fund 244 nature trail projects, 33,000 acres dedicated to parks or open space, 175 tree planting projects, and much more.

Releasing Gulls at White Point

Recently, I had the privilege of participating in a release of three Western Gulls that we helped rehabilitate at International Bird Rescue in San Pedro, CA.

We frequently receive injured or sick gulls and other aquatic birds at the rehab center. The veterinary staff does their best to plan a path to wellness for these birds.
